I heard the same electronic (like a modem) noise as well and I agree with you although I think maybe Peter doesn't have to come in contact with people to use his abilities, its just he doesnt realize he has them until he is near those people. Just a thought.

It's been said in the show a couple times, if I remember correctly, that Peter is like a sponge. He absorbs the powers of those around him. Mohinder said this when he was talking to Nathan.

Huh. It's interesting that there are people who heard different things. In my mind, i'm sure as it was in yours, it was electronics. I guess we'll wait and see, but i'm stickin to my Hana theory. :)

I think the people have to be close to him in order for him to "learn" their powers. So maybe Hana is somewhere nearby, but I'm gonna have to agree with re and adam that it was like the feedback that came from Peter and Matt being in the same space.
My theory is that once he realized that he just had to remember how the people made him feel, he started thinking about all of the people with powers that he had met, thus having an overload from thinking of them all at once.

No. It is NOT feedback. He wasn't near anyone else who can read minds. Feedback is when he reads their mind, hears what they say, while they are reading his mind and hearing what they are saying in his mind and it loops through each person over and over again.
For it to be feedback from his mind reading, he would have to be near another person who could read minds with both of them reading each other's minds.
